Babylonstoren Babel Red Blend — Western Cape, South Africa 2024

Babylonstoren is one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms in South Africa — set at the foot of Simonsberg in the Franschhoek wine valley, where the farm has been cultivating vines, fruit, and vegetables since the 17th century. The Babel Red Blend is the estate’s most ambitious expression: a nine-variety blend of Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir, and Marselan, each component aged separately in oak barrels before blending. The result is a wine of remarkable complexity and generosity for the price. 

Deep ruby in color. The nose is inviting and layered: ripe black fruit, dark plum, and a savory edge of cigar and warm spice. Johanneshof Reinisch is one of Austria's most respected family estates, based in Tattendorf in the Thermenregion south of Vienna. The estate is a benchmark producer of St. Laurent — Austria's indigenous red grape that shares DNA with Pinot Noir but delivers a richer, darker, more generous style. The warm, dry gravel soils of Tattendorf are ideally suited to this heat-loving variety.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby in color with an intense bouquet of ripe dark cherry, plum, and a hint of raw, earthy depth. Manzanilla La Jaca is the most famous wine from Bodegas Álvaro Domecq, together with the Fino La Janda. Last year all of the entry-level wines (not the ‘1730’ series) were given a modern, graphical label with abstract motifs and bold colours.

Its high acidity and dry finish make it incredibly versatile:

This Chianti Riserva is produced from specially selected Sangiovese grapes grown following the traditional methods in the vineyards of the Chianti production area. A nose of black fruits, spices, white pepper, clove, cardamon, eucalyptus, thyme and rosemary - complex in other words, with a fantastic finish.

Federico Benegas Lynch was raised at ‘El Trapiche’, a winery established in 1883 by his great, great grandfather, Don Tiburcio Benegas, one of the original pioneers of Argentine wine. The winery was finally sold in the 1970s and in 1998, following a successful business career in Buenos Aires, Federico returned to Mendoza to re-kindle his lifelong passion and professional destiny, wine. He bought Finca La Libertad, an historic 40-hectare vineyard with ‘soils’ of stone on the old Upper Mendoza riverbank in Cruz de Piedra, and the old winery that belonged to his mother’s family which he quickly set about refurbishing. His idea was based on the traditional French Châteaux system, where proprietorship of vineyard and winery are inextricably linked.

Winemaker’s tasting notes:  2022 Intercept Chardonnay is medium bodied with notes of ripe peaches, shortbread, and spiced apples. Rich from barrel fermentation and sur-lie aging, the wine has bright acidity with a lingering toasty oak finish.
