Approachable and drinking well out of the gate, this medium to full-bodied red is ripe with juicy fruit, good structure, ripe tannins, and pithy texture, as well as a touch of warming spice on a long finish. This Grand Rosé has a high percentage of Chardonnay, which creates freshness and precision, complemented by Pinot Noir with delivers very fine and crunchy fruit. With 4 years minimum ageing in the cellars, this Rosé balances between freshness and fruit without masking the wine’s character and purity. The nose reveals aromas of citrus and strawberries with subtle notes of red berries and spice. The palate is well-built with a constant balance between the tension of the acidity and the smoothness of the fruit, while the finish shows a nice roundness and lovely minerality.

While Leflaive’s Grand Crus from Puligny-Montrachet fetch thousands, their Mâcon-Verzé wines are crafted with the same biodynamic rigor and technical precision by the same winemaking team.

The "Les Chênes" (The Oaks) is a specific vineyard within the Mâcon-Verzé appellation known for its older vines (some planted in 1935) and south-facing exposure, which produces a wine with more structure and "toasty" complexity than their standard Mâcon-Verzé.

Winemaker Description 

Clay-limestone terroir with little depth before reaching the bedrock. Gentle to very steep slopes. Surface area: 3.43 ha located in the heart of the Verzé valley, "Les Chênes" comprises two south-west-facing parcels.

The vines are cultivated biodynamically.

Harvesting is entirely manual, and pressing is carried out in Verzé. After decanting, the musts are transported daily to Puligny- Montrachet for fermentation and ageing, under the watchful eye of Domaine Leflaive's technical team. Vinification takes place in vats, and ageing lasts from 15 to 16 months.
Pressing: Long, gentle pneumatic pressing, 24-hour decanting followed by settling.
Fermentation: 55% in stainless steel tanks, 42% in cement tanks and 3% in new oak barrels.

Mike DeSimone of the Wine Enthusiast writes 95 Points | Dark ruby in color, this wine has a nose of black cherry, cedar chest and violet candy. A pleasant floral note is a constant companion to blackberry, anisette, clove and dark-chocolate flavors that are enclosed in a shell of muscular tannins. A soft note of pomegranate permeates the grippy finish. Drink through 2035.

Castello di Verduno Barolo Massara — Verduno, Piedmont 2020

Castello di Verduno is one of Piedmont's most historic estates, occupying a castle constructed in the early 1500s in Verduno — the northernmost commune of Barolo — and owned by the Burlotto family since 1909. The Massara vineyard sits on chalky clay soils known as Marne di Sant'Agata (30% sand, 55% clay, 15% limestone), farmed organically and hand-harvested in the first or second week of October. The 2020 vintage was vinified in open-top wooden vats with a remarkable 61-day maceration using the traditional submerged cap method, then aged 31 months in large Austrian and Slavonian botti grandi, followed by one month in stainless steel and 18 months in bottle before release. Just 5,940 bottles and 30 magnums were produced. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The nose is inviting and open: ripe cherries, raspberry seed, fresh flowers, fresh herbs, and a delightful note of cola that melds seamlessly with mixed red fruits both fresh and preserved. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and elegant with lovely zesty lift, opulent texture, fine tannins, and a kiss of sweet berried fruit through the finish. The 2022 Brut Nature Chemin de Rois is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, vinified and aged in barrel. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, the 2022 is seriously impressive right out of the gate. All the elements are so well balanced. The purity of the fruit, the definition, the balance—everything is so profoundly beautiful. This sensational Champagne puts Vincent Cuillier on the map. I can't recommend it highly enough.
