Daou Vineyards is one of Paso Robles’ most celebrated estates, founded by brothers Georges and Daniel Daou on a dramatic hilltop site in the Adelaida District. Best known for their benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon, Daou also produces a Chardonnay of genuine character — aged 7 months in 30% new French oak, striking a stellar balance between tropical richness and focused acidity that sets it apart from heavier, over-oaked California styles.

The 2025 opens with enticing aromas of pear, passion fruit, pineapple, and honeysuckle, with hints of white peach, nutmeg, and buttered toast, rounded out by nuances of crushed hazelnut, hibiscus, papaya, and vanilla. On the lush, vibrant palate, tropical flavors of mango, kiwi, and pineapple mingle with golden apple and clover honey, while suggestions of casaba melon, citrus zest, and toasty oak persist on a clean, balanced finish.

In 1968, Miljenko “Mike” Grgich went to work for Robert Mondavi as chief enologist, crafting the inaugural release of “Fumé Blanc” — an elegant, dry, oak-aged style of Sauvignon Blanc that Mondavi named after the French word for smoke. A decade later, Mike's 1973 Chardonnay famously won the Judgment of Paris, putting California wine on the world map. He went on to found Grgich Hills Estate in 1977, where he continued to champion the Fumé Blanc style as a tribute to his mentor and friend. Today, the estate farms all five of its Napa Valley vineyards organically and biodynamically.
