Greywacke is the personal project of Kevin Judd — the winemaker who spent two decades building Cloudy Bay into one of the world's most recognized Sauvignon Blanc brands before striking out on his own. Named after the hard, dark stone that forms the riverbeds of Marlborough, Greywacke is a small-production estate focused on wines of genuine depth and site specificity. The Wairau Valley Sauvignon Blanc is their benchmark expression: harvested largely by machine during cool, often cold night-time conditions, picked earlier than normal over a three-week period commencing 16 March, transported directly to the winery in the Omaka Valley, lightly pressed for high-quality juice, and left on lees on individual vineyard batches until late June before blending.
