Buena Vista is California’s oldest premium winery — and one of its most colorful. Founded in 1857 in Sonoma by Agoston Haraszthy, the self-proclaimed “Count of Buena Vista,” a Hungarian immigrant who pursued “purple gold” in the hills of Northern California after following the forty-niners, Buena Vista established the template for California fine wine. Since 2011, winemaking has resumed in the original caves — the first wine caves in California — with small-lot wines crafted in open-top oak fermenters with native yeasts and hand punch-downs. The Chateau Cabernet Sauvignon honors the estate’s Napa Valley roots: a full-bodied, plush, and expressive Cabernet that delivers the richness and concentration the valley is famous for. Deep purple in the glass. The nose is captivating: fresh raspberry, luscious cherry, cranberry, vanilla, chocolate plum, and violets. On the palate, it is full-bodied, plush, and concentrated, with flavors of strawberry, sweet cherry, blackcurrant, boysenberry, and vanilla cake, framed by velvet tannins, a tickle of white peppered cedar, and a long, harmoniously balanced finish.
