The Estate & Terroir
The farmhouse was built in 1860 to serve the Abbey of Pierredon, which had little arable land. Restoration began in 1952, followed by a well in 1960. Nicolas took over and modernized the estate in 1965, planting its first wine grapes without chemical products. Luc joined in 1976, when the first bottles were produced; sales expanded from the estate to Nordic countries and the United States, and the wines earned numerous medals.
Frédéri joined the cellar in 1990 after studying oenology and spending five years at Château de Beaulieu. The wines, previously part of Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, gained their own Les Baux-de-Provence appellation in 1995. In 1997, the brothers completed their late father's project for a bright new retail space, retaining a traditional fireplace lit throughout winter.
Eve joined in 2000 after studying viticulture and oenology and gaining experience in Burgundy and California. She assisted Frédéri with winemaking and worked in sales. The range expanded with Cuvée du Paradis in 2004 and a separate Cuvée sans soufre the following year. Olivier joined in 2018 to work in the vines and assist his father in monitoring the wines. The family team includes Luc Cartier in distribution, Frédéri as cellar master, Eve in administration and Olivier in production and cellar quality.
Organic Farming & Winemaking
Pioneers of organic farming, the family joined Nature et Progrès in 1975. The estate cultivates 45 hectares of vines and 20 hectares of olive groves using organic methods. Mechanical soil cultivation controls weeds; copper and sulfur are used for disease management, while green manure and sheep manure support living soils. The estate describes a history without synthetic fertilizers or herbicides.
The vines grow in the shadow of Les Alpilles, a limestone range with peaks reaching 500 meters. The listing's blend is 38% Syrah, 22% Grenache, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Carignan. Indigenous yeasts are used, with aging in a combination of stainless steel and large older barrels.
Winemaker Description
A richly flavored red with autumnal aromas, plush red/black fruits and peppery spice. Few other Provençal reds can match the power and grace of this bottle (its form a traditional Normandy "Calvados" shape that only Gourgonnier uses).
Pairing & Serving
Pair with grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic, wood-fired pizza with olives and sausage, or hearty ratatouille. Roasted eggplant with miso and lentil stews are flavorful vegetarian options. Try serving slightly below room temperature.
