Nikolaihof Gruner Veltliner Zwickl BIODYNAMIC 2023 750ml
Nikolaihof is the oldest winery in Austria, with nearly 2,000 years of history and one of the first estates in the world to adopt biodynamic farming. Owned by the Saahs family since 1894 and Demeter-certified, the estate's vineyards in the Wachau are farmed without herbicides, pesticides, or synthetic sprays — guided instead by biodynamic preparations and a deep respect for the land.
The Zwickl is Nikolaihof's signature unfiltered Grüner Veltliner — a Hefeabzug-style wine bottled with its lees. Pour carefully for a bright, clear glass, or shake the bottle for a cloudy, textural pour full of yeasty depth. Two wines in one bottle.
Tasting Notes
Aromas of grapefruit, green apple, chopped herbs, and a lightly smoky, flinty minerality. The palate is wonderfully snappy and saline, with vigorous apple fruit, full-on yeast texture, and a long, refreshing finish. Classic Wachau Grüner with biodynamic soul.

The Grüner Veltliner Zwickl naturtrüb (naturally cloudy) is a lovely intense, fruity white that has been bottled unfiltered after six months on the fine lees. It is light, dry and gentle on the palate, very elegant, finessed and charming, an easygoing Grüner Veltliner with very delicate acidity and fine grip on the dry finish.
Expert Reviews - Prior Vintage 2022
Stuart Pigott writes: Some will consider this unfiltered, light-bodied gruner veltliner a natural, but whichever way you see it this has stacks of crisp apple fruit and white pepper character. I love the interplay of lemony freshness with a touch of leesy creaminess at the joyfully bright finish. Just 11.5% alcohol. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap. - 91
Anne Krebiehl MW writes: The 2022 Grüner Veltliner Zwickl Unfiltriert is named after the_ Zwickl_ concept of cloudy, unfiltered beer. Winemaker Nikolaus Saahs Jr. emphasizes that the term refers only to not filtering the wine and is a style that has been made since 2014. Vinified in stainless steel, the grapes are grown in Mautern and Stein, i.e. on both banks of the Danube. Intense leesy freshness and yeastiness rise from the glass. The palate is mild, smooth and rounded, with a white pepper notion and an almost perfumed, floral quality to the yeastiness on the mid-palate. There is lovely freshness on the finish.
