In 1968, Miljenko “Mike” Grgich went to work for Robert Mondavi as chief enologist, crafting the inaugural release of “Fumé Blanc” — an elegant, dry, oak-aged style of Sauvignon Blanc that Mondavi named after the French word for smoke. When Geyserville hits in a great vintage, it takes me back to what I originally loved about California wine. Or to that sense of optimism on a spring day when I first visited San Francisco in 1984, to pitch this magazine on publishing services. I didn’t know at the time that I would still be publishing it 40 years later, and I didn’t know how much California wine would change. Or how little the style and intention of Geyserville would change. The team at Ridge manages the vineyard’s generations of vines to produce complex wines like this perfectly ripe 2021, with its dark, resinous scents of marijuana, its deep layers of rich fruit and the fruitiness of detailed tannins. The fresh, herbal complexity is pretty epic and the richness doesn’t stop. What I want from California.

It has a pure, expressive bouquet of fresh plums, figs, mulberries, peppery herbs, leather, and vanilla bean, and it takes some air to show at its best, gaining depth and richness with time in the glass. This medium to full-bodied, spicy, elegant red blend has a touch more oak present than I'm accustomed to, but it has a silky, elegant mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. It's going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age. Rating: 93+

Winemaking

Only the first pressing of the grapes is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks; malolactic fermentation is avoided to preserve freshness and natural acidity. The estate-produced Bouzy Rouge contributes the Rosé’s attractive color, richness, and red-fruit complexity. Aged approximately four years on lees before release — well beyond the NV minimum — developing greater texture and depth while retaining vibrant fruit. Sustainable farming, lutte raisonnée. Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc — Wairau Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand 2025

Greywacke is the personal project of Kevin Judd — the winemaker who spent two decades building Cloudy Bay into one of the world's most recognized Sauvignon Blanc brands before striking out on his own. Named after the hard, dark stone that forms the riverbeds of Marlborough, Greywacke is a small-production estate focused on wines of genuine depth and site specificity. The Wairau Valley Sauvignon Blanc is their benchmark expression: harvested largely by machine during cool, often cold night-time conditions, picked earlier than normal over a three-week period commencing 16 March, transported directly to the winery in the Omaka Valley, lightly pressed for high-quality juice, and left on lees on individual vineyard batches until late June before blending. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with the volume turned down a notch — and all the better for it.

The 2025 pours a pale, luminous gold. The nose is vibrant and aromatic — lemon blossom, honeydew melon, orange blossom, passion fruit, white pineapple, kumquat, and lime sherbet, delicately infused with herb garden botanicals and a flourish of elderflower and wildflowers. There is the same lovely purity and excellent energy of the Clos St. Jacques but with more size, weight and power and particularly so on the hugely long and more complex finish. Pommery holds a singular place in Champagne history: in 1874, the house introduced the world’s first successful Brut Champagne — a revolutionary departure from the sweet styles that dominated the era. The Brut Royal is the direct heir to that legacy, a perfectly balanced assemblage of equal thirds Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier that has defined the house style for 150 years. Based on the 2018 vintage with reserve wines blended for consistency and complexity, this is a Champagne of vivacity, elegance, and effortless drinkability — earning 92 points from both James Suckling and Decanter.

The color is pale yellow with light green accents. The nose is vivacious and fresh: citrus, white flowers, small berries, verbena, plum, and summer flowers, with lovely shortbread depth. On the palate, it is elegant and vibrant — round and ample, with peach, lemon, grapefruit, biscuit, and honey, sleek bubbles, and a harmonious, minerally finish that never tires. Winemaker Description

The 2024 vintage in the Willamette Valley was a winemaker’s dream — cool, well-paced, and ideal for Elk Cove’s six estate vineyard sites: The Winery Estate, Mount Richmond, Five Mountain, Clay Court, Goodrich, and Windhill. A longer harvest window of 40 days allowed each block to receive optimal attention, yielding concentrated, fruit-forward wines with great complexity. The winery considers 2024 a potential classic Willamette Valley vintage.

Made from 100% estate-grown fruit spanning all three major Willamette Valley soil types, with both Pommard and Dijon clones represented. Each vineyard block is fermented separately in small, temperature-controlled steel tanks, hand punched down twice daily, then aged 10 months in French oak before careful blending. The result is Elk Cove’s most approachable, well-balanced Pinot Noir — fresh fruit, well-integrated alcohol, and great concentration of flavor.
