Marqués de Cáceres Gaudium 2021 is a refined, full-bodied Rioja built around Tempranillo, showing the depth, polish and structure expected from one of the estate’s most ambitious wines.

The palate is rich and layered, with flavors of blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum joined by notes of fig, dark chocolate, cedar, coffee bean and warm spice. The oak is well integrated, adding smoky and savory complexity without overwhelming the fruit.

An excellent growing season with 30% more rainfall than average, well-distributed across the year. A warm February brought consistent bud break, while a warm and slightly humid May supported healthy early growth. A 10-week period of showers with ideal temperatures through summer ensured slow, even ripening — resulting in fresh, well-structured fruit with natural acidity and balance.

Estate director Axel Heinz called 2020 ‘a classic Ornellaia,’ selecting ‘La Proporzione’ (proportion) as the theme to describe its character. The blend — 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot — marks a return to a more typical composition. Raised in 70% new French oak for 18 months, then 12 months in bottle prior to release. Fine-grained and beautifully textured, with finely integrated tannins supporting a concentration of black fruits lightened by red berries. It showcases vibrant, fresh fruit flavours alongside the deeper, richer complexity that comes with extended time in oak.

With notes of Turkish Delight, raisins, walnuts, and dense fruit cake, this tier has a much greater richness and complexity than the Rutherglen tier, hinting at the mature wood-aged characters that will continue to develop as it ages. This wine displays a pale straw colour with brilliant green edge. On the nose the wine
opens with crisp green apple and lime blossom. This evolves to incorporate a complex
melange of lemongrass, petrichor and subtle blackcurrant leaf. The palate is bright

oyster shell salinity.

Don Melchor Puente Alto Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon — Maipo Valley, Chile 2022 750ml

Chile’s first icon wine and a true benchmark among the world’s finest labels, Don Melchor is the singular expression of the Puente Alto Denomination of Origin — a vineyard planted at the foot of the Andes Mountains on the northern bank of the Maipo River at 650 meters elevation. The Don Melchor Vineyard spans 125 hectares, with vines averaging 38 years of age, rooted in the poor gravel soils and balanced temperatures that define this legendary Cabernet Sauvignon terroir. The 2024 Felino is sourced 65% from Valle de Uco and 35% from Luján de Cuyo, and aged nine months in small French oak barriques with only 8% new oak — a restrained approach that preserves the vibrancy and freshness of the fruit while adding subtle complexity and texture. The Producer

Badia a Coltibuono is one of Chianti Classico's most storied estates, with roots in an 11th-century monastery in Gaiole in Chianti, dating back to 1051. For six generations the Stucchi Prinetti family has carried that story forward, farming organically for more than 40 years with a deep respect for their land. Their Estate Chianti Classico is a benchmark expression of Sangiovese: honest, structured and unmistakably Tuscan.

The Wine

Sangiovese-led, with small amounts of Colorino, Ciliegiolo and Canaiolo. Expect a bright ruby color with violet highlights and a layered nose of iris, violet, tobacco, black pepper and marasca cherry. The palate is balanced and tightly knit, with crunchy, powdery tannins, juicy acidity and a clean mineral backbone, finishing warm and persistent.

Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva — Sardinia, Italy 2021

Sella & Mosca is Sardinia's most storied and important winery, founded in 1899 near Alghero in the northwest of the island. With over 500 hectares under vine, it is one of Europe's largest single-estate wineries — and its Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva is the benchmark expression of the island's most celebrated indigenous red grape. Cannonau — known on the mainland and in France as Grenache — has been grown in Sardinia for centuries and thrives in the island's sun-drenched, wind-swept terrain. G.D. Vajra’s Barbera d’Alba comes from a wonderful range of estate vineyards in Piedmont. Fermented for an average of 20 days and aged no less than twelve months in respect of the rhythm of nature, it is a fine blend — charming, rich yet forward.

The 2024 vintage exhibits a brilliant purple hue. On the nose, a celebration of freshness: red berry juice, roses, and fresh plums. The palate is crisp and juicy, layering sweet red and black cherries, spices, and fresh dark berries into a vibrant, aromatic finish that defines the vintage.

Food Pairings

A natural companion for pasta with tomato-based sauces, wood-fired pizza, grilled sausages, roasted chicken, mushroom risotto, and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve slightly chilled (60–65°F) to enhance its refreshing character.

Masseto 2017 is a monument to Merlot — born from a single triangular plot of blue clay soils at the foot of the Tuscan hills, just a breath from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The 2017 vintage, warm and sun-drenched, yielded smaller, more concentrated berries that translate into a wine of extraordinary depth and presence. Fermented in a combination of steel and oak tanks, then aged 24 months in new French barriques and a further 12 months in bottle before release.

The color is near-opaque, a deep inky ruby-black. On the nose, rich layers of concentrated black cherry, blackcurrant, and plum are interlaced with lavender, spice, liquorice, and a whisper of macchia mediterranea. The palate is full-bodied and velvety, with densely knit tannins that carry the wine's considerable weight with remarkable grace. A vibrant thread of acidity runs through the finish, lending freshness and focus to what is ultimately a wine of immense power and elegance. Best from 2025 through 2045+.

Jeb Dunnuck 98 Points | A medium red hue, the 2020 Barolo Rocche Di Castiglione offers more complexity and is more nuanced in the glass, with notes of dried raspberries, tangerine, roses, dried herbs, and cedar. Medium-bodied, it is crunchy with an elegant feel but has balanced structure and retains a somewhat more chiseled feel that’s true to the vintage. It has a lot to enjoy now and also has a wide drinking window. Drink 2025-2050.

The Wine Advocate 96 Points | The Vietti 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a very delineated wine with sharp ferrous notes, cherry cola, redcurrant and chalky mineral. It is extremely precise in terms of its aromas. The effect is direct and layered, showing different sides and increasing complexity as it opens in the glass. Dried floral notes, purple flower and iris also appear delicately. The chalky tannins feel abrupt at this young stage, but this wine is built to last nonetheless. Only 3,512 bottles were created.

Vinous 96 Points | The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a magical wine from a magical site. It marries finesse and volume to a degree that is not found in most of the other wines in this range. Castiglione Falletto is the center of the Barolo production zone, literally and figuratively, the place where many different soil types meet. As a result, the wines often possess mind-blowing balance, which is very much the case here.
