Soft, sweet butterscotch and orange peel meet poached pears and stone fruits. Earthiness appears as dried autumn leaves, coffee, old oak, and tobacco. Among the tangle of spices, tasters identified chili pepper, allspice, cloves, and universally adored its ginger note. Finally, wisps of smoke and sea salt. Nikka From The Barrel, according to those behind it, was first introduced into Japan back in 1986, and is considered a coveted expression for travelers to bring back from its homeland. It is a Japanese blended whisky, bringing together a very complex mix of more than 100 different batches of malt whisky and grain whisky produced at Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, and aged in multiple types of casks: ex-bourbon barrels and puncheons, ex-sherry butts, and refilled, recharred and remade hogsheads. While non-age statement in nature, importer Hotaling & Co. did note the blend undergoes three to six months of additional aging at Nikka’s aging cellar to help in the marriage of flavors. Michter’s U.S. 1 Unblended American Whiskey — Louisville, Kentucky | 41.7% ABV

Michter’s U.S. 1 Unblended American Whiskey is one of the most distinctive and misunderstood bottles in American whiskey — and one of the most rewarding. Unlike Bourbon, which by law must be aged in new, charred American oak, Michter’s Unblended American is aged in used, whiskey-soaked barrels, producing a spirit that sits in its own category: richer, more spirit-forward, and free from the constraints of any legal definition. Crucially, it never contains grain neutral spirits — hence the “unblended” distinction that sets it apart from blended American whiskeys. In late 2013, Master Distiller Willie Pratt re-released the U.S. 1 after a nearly three-year absence, declaring it “just right” and “the best it’s ever been.”

The nose is warm and generous: caramel popcorn, butterscotch, and dried fruits with a gentle lift of cinnamon and nutmeg spice. On the palate, it is smooth and approachable — the used-barrel aging delivering a rounder, more mellow character than a typical Bourbon, with a long, warming finish that rewards slow sipping. The Wine Enthusiast 90 Points | The name of this whisky has nothing to do with coffee—rather, it's named for a type of still invented by Aneas Coffey, which is used to make this golden spirit. It offers mild vanilla-pear aromatics and is relatively light and silky on the palate. Look for a light vanilla sweetness at first, which gives way to a rounded dark chocolate note and baking spice finish. Recommended for highballs and other mixed drinks.

Coffey Malt is made from 100% malted barley. However it is not categorized as “malt whisky” but as “grain whisky” since it is not distilled in a pot still. This unique production method results in extraordinary flavors and texture.

Oban Little Bay Small Cask — Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Oban is one of Scotland’s oldest and most storied distilleries, founded in 1794 on the rugged west coast of the Highlands — a town and a distillery that grew up together. It’s light to medium-bodied, with honey, cinnamon, and a big hit of rye spice, sweetening with vanilla, spun sugar, and golden syrup, setting up a push and pull between the rye and the sweet notes, before a finish of toffee, cinnamon, cinder toffee, and walnuts in syrup.

The Dalmore 12 is recognized as a whisky with character far beyond its age. The spirit is initially matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks, yielding soft vanilla and honey notes. A proportion of the spirit is then finessed in pinnacle Sherry casks, including 30-Year Old Matusalem Oloroso casks, exclusive to The Dalmore, to give the whisky a rich, nutty character.

Created in partnership with Nick Offerman, Lagavulin Offerman Edition 11 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a woody and peaty, fruity and spicy offering. The woody, peaty notes lead from the front, gently tingling the tongue in a cha-cha before fading to reveal a veritable waltz of sweet berry and orchard fruit notes. Aged in a mix of refilled and rejuvenated American Oak barrels, this whisky demands to be served in a traditional whisky glass, neat or with a little water.

Carrying on a 200-year-old tradition of distilling excellence, the Lagavulin distillery is said to be one of the oldest distilleries on Islay. Founded in 1816 by farmer John Johnston and later led by Peter Mackie in 1890, the name Lagavulin was to become the last word on the delicacy of Islay malts. Miles and miles of peat bog in the west of the island provide the raw material which imbues the barley with their iconic smoky flavor, and the rich peaty water from the tranquil Lochan Sholum in the hills above the distillery makes the flavors so unique. It takes time, but patience is their finest virtue and rushing good whisky is just not how they take care of things in Islay.

Whisky Advocate 92 Points | This Quinta Ruban succeeds the 12 year old version, adding two additional years of finishing in port casks, while maintaining the same bargain price. The result is a symphony of understated opulence. Marzipan, fresh apple and pear, milk chocolate, red berries, candied ginger, and praline on the nose build slowly, leading into a fruity, spiced palate. Flavors of soft gingerbread, molasses cake, cherry pie, spiced plums, almond nougat, and dark chocolate intermingle with faint strains of pipe tobacco. It sings on the finish, with a parting crescendo of hazelnut, spice, cigar wrapper, and lengthy oak.

Hibiki Japanese Harmony · Blended Whisky · Japan

Inspired by the subtlety of Japan’s 24 seasons, Hibiki Japanese Harmony is a blend of malt and grain whiskies from Suntory’s Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries. The Dalmore Port Wood Reserve starts its journey in the finest American white oak ex-bourbon casks. The precious liquid is then split equally with half of the whisky remaining in the American white oak and the remainder transferred to aged Tawny Port pipes from W & J Graham’s vineyard in Portugal. They are then married back together to harmonize the flavors before bottling.
