Wine Advocate 96 Points | More elegant and refined than the Napa Cab, the 2019 Insignia features restrained cedar and vanilla notes (despite spending two years in 100% new French oak) and delicate herbal shadings accenting cassis and black cherry fruit. Full-bodied, velvety and somewhat open-knit on the palate, it turns plush and long on the finish, adding a touch of warmth. Production this year is approximately 17,000 cases, reflecting the increased volume coming from recently replanted vineyards. It's remarkable what a good job they continue to do with this bottling year after year, without compromising on quality.

Jeb Dunnuck 99 Points | Another beautiful wine from this team, the 2019 Insignia is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon but includes smaller amounts of Merlot and Malbec, brought up all in new barrels, sourced from seven estate vineyards. It has a classic varietal and incredibly complex nose of crème de cassis, freshly sharpened pencils, green tobacco, and damp earth, with a kiss of background sappy spring flowers. Seemingly from a cooler year with its freshness, vibrancy, and herbal, floral character on the nose, it's nevertheless full-bodied and beautifully concentrated on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, and a gorgeous finish. Unquestionably up with the finest vintages of this cuvée, this is legit awesome juice that’s going to offer incredible pleasure over the coming 20-25 years. Hats off to winemaker Ashley Hepworth.

James Suckling 98 Points | A very aromatic Insignia with pencil-shaving and graphite highlights to the dark fruit and blackberries. Full-bodied yet tensioned and vertical with very fine tannins that run deep and layered in the wine. Needs time to come together but fantastic tension and structure. Try after 2027.Vinous 96 points The 2019 Insignia is a bold explosive wine. Sumptuous dark fruit mocha leather sweet spice and tobacco are all amplified in an Insignia endowed with tremendous textural intensity and plenty of soft contours. I imagine the 2019 will age well for years but it will also drink well with minimal cellaring.
  

Winemaker Description 

Light amber, golden hue, with a pronounced varietal aroma and taste. Characterized by aromas of ripe quince, jams and dried fruits. The wine is harmonious, balanced with tannins and acidity.

The Marnaveli Kisi-Khikhvi Amber Wine 2023 is a traditional Georgian "orange" or skin-contact wine produced in the Kakheti region. This wine is crafted using the ancient Qvevri method—fermenting and aging the grapes in large, beeswax-lined clay vessels buried underground.

Has a long ending. Ideal for dried apricots and figs. Churchkhela, cheese and honey, as well as seafood and white meat. 

Dr. Konstantin Frank Rkatsiteli — Finger Lakes, New York 2024

Dr. Konstantin Frank is the founding father of the American vinifera movement — the visionary who, in 1957, planted the first European vinifera vines in the Eastern United States on the southwestern hills of Keuka Lake and ignited a revolution that forever changed New York wine. Four generations later, the Frank family remains the benchmark for Finger Lakes winemaking — and this Rkatsiteli is their most ancient and extraordinary expression. Rkatsiteli is a Georgian grape variety dating back to 3000 B.C., making it one of the oldest known cultivated grapes in the world. The 2024 is crafted as an amber wine with one month of skin contact — a nod to the ancient Georgian qvevri tradition — resulting in a wine of striking complexity, texture, and depth. 

The nose is arresting and aromatic: toasted orange peel, macerated apricot, orchard blossoms, fresh ginger, and cardamom. On the palate, zesty citrus unfolds with layers of stone fruit, framed by a gentle tannic grip reminiscent of a light red. Full-bodied with subtle warmth, this amber wine balances texture, spice, and freshness in a style that is genuinely unlike anything else in the glass.

Winemaker Description 

GRAPES: Cinsault (100%). 

Cinsault has been farmed in the Bekaa Valley since the mid-19th century before ceding the way to new imported varieties. In 2014, Domaine des Tourelles decided to revive this grape by searching out very old Cinsault vines, over 50 years of age, and fermenting the wines in concrete tanks using wild yeasts and nothing else to offer the purest expression of that grape. The result is a supple wine that beautifully reflects the terroir of the Bekaa Valley, with an aging potential of several years.

There is not much I can say about Bekaa-born Faouzi Issa co-owner and winemaker of Domaine des Tourelles in the Bekaa Valley, that has not already been said by Jancis and Tam but in a week in which Lebanon has again been in the news because of death and destruction, I wanted to celebrate the life that continues to be created every year at Domaine des Tourelles in the most challenging circumstances imaginable. (See Michael Karam’s Lessons in wine-region survival.)

Issa told me on Wednesday that the nearest pager explosion to them was 1 km away from the winery.

In 2018, the year Domaine des Tourelles celebrated its 150th anniversary, Jancis’s articles Lebanon and the new Serge Hochar? and Lebanon’s oldest winery told of Issa’s journey into wine, via Bordeaux’s Château Margaux and René Rostaing in the Rhône, as well as giving a brief history of Domaine des Tourelles, Lebanese wine more generally and the arrival of Cinsault in the country in the 19th century along with Carignan and Grenache.

Tam continued the story in 2022 in more personal terms in Old-vine wines – part 1 Lebanon, describing Issa as ‘that mesmeric combination of scientist, engineer and romantic’, at the same time highlighting Issa’s commitment to old vines.

The first vintage of this wine was 2014, which was when Issa realised that the old vines offered something special and deserved to be bottled separately (they now have four wines in their Old Vine Collection). He explains, ‘Cinsault has been farmed in the Bekaa Valley since the mid 19th century before ceding the way to new imported varieties.’ For many a year, it was the most widely planted variety in the country but it is now much less popular than it once was.

Justin Vineyard is one of Paso Robles' founding estates, established in 1981 in the Adelaida Hills — where calcareous soils, hot days, and dramatically cool nights create ideal conditions for Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon. Justin has become the benchmark producer of the appellation, crafting wines of genuine depth, balance, and approachability that rival Napa at a fraction of the price. A deep ruby/magenta color, the 2022 Il Pino Di Biserno starts to show more mineral-inflected notes of graphite, preserved strawberries, blackberries, cocoa, and sweet herbs. Full-bodied, the palate expands with ripe tannins, even acidity, and darker mineral undercurrents, as well as a hint of gamey richness and notes of tea leaf through the mid-palate and rather long finish. The Tenuta di Biserno 2022 Il Pino di Biserno delivers a ripe fruit profile with blackberry confit and sweet cherry pie. Those warm vintage tones are followed by an ample use of oak that adds baking spice and toasted nutmeg. There is a hint of campfire ash or something blackened or toasted at the core of this full-bodied Tuscan blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Verdot. Pheasant's Tears is one of Georgia's most celebrated natural wine producers, founded by Gela Patalishvili — an 8th-generation winemaker from the Kakheti region — and John Wurdeman, an American painter who fell in love with Georgia and its ancient wine culture in 1998. Together, they have dedicated themselves to preserving and reviving Georgia's extraordinary 8,000-year-old winemaking heritage, farming around ten indigenous grape varieties without pesticides or herbicides and vinifying everything in qvevri — traditional clay amphorae buried in the earth, used in Georgia since the Neolithic era.

Kisi is a rare and ancient Georgian white grape variety grown almost exclusively in the Kakheti region, in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains. At Pheasant's Tears, it is vinified in the traditional Georgian manner: fermented and aged in qvevri with extended skin maceration of six months — producing what Georgians call an "amber wine" and the rest of the world has come to know as "orange wine." The result is a wine of extraordinary depth, texture, and complexity that has no real equivalent in the conventional wine world.

The 2024 Kisi is deep amber-gold in the glass. The nose is captivating — dried apricot, quince, honey, beeswax, dried flowers, and a hint of walnut, with an earthy, almost ancient quality that speaks directly to the qvevri. On the palate, unusually powerful structure with grippy, polished tannins — rare in a white wine — balanced by bright acidity and a long, complex, spiced finish. Not aggressive, but deeply serious. Winemaker Description

Overall goals and philosophy of wine: Syrah is a beguiling grape with many expressions in the vinous world, from the gamey classics of France to the inkiness of Australia. In the Finger Lakes, it takes a special site to nurture these beautiful vines to full maturity, but in Glacier Ridge we have found just such a vineyard. With intense Vietnamese peppercorn aromatics, bright red cherry flavors, and a brooding minerality underneath, this Syrah is a pure expression of what can be achieved with one of our favorite grapes in a cool climate. Put simply, think northern Rhone rather than Barossa. 

Notable vineyard management details: Glacier Ridge takes a studied minimalist approach in the vineyard; all weed control is manual and allows for some non-grape vegetation for competition as well as insect biodiversity. Crop size are subsequently lower as a result, with a notable difference in increased ripening capability of the grapes.

It is not known for certain how long Gelber Muskateller has been in the Rust vineyards. We do know that this grape variety used to be called Weirer. This name comes from Weihrauch (frankincense) because the nutmeg scent is so prevalent. Winemaker Description.

Winemaker Description

Teran is a Croatian speciality; the grape produces wines with an abundance of acidity and tannins. Kozlovic sun-dries a portion of his Teran grapes on hay (thereby reducing their acidity) after making several passes through the vineyard. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and aged in large oak barrels for 12 months. The resulting wine has an exquisite texture and mouthfeel.

Winemaker Description 

Kozlovic is family winery that started in 1904 in the Valle Valley of Istria, Croatia. The estate has been passed down from generation to generation, and the importance of family is at the center of what Kozlovic does. The vineyards are planted to the local varietals Malvazija, Muscat Momiano, Muscat Rose and Teran and grown on the hills of Valle, Santa Lucia and Kontarini in clay soils known locally as "Terra Bianca" (a mix of flysch, limestone and white clay). The vines are grown sustainably with minimal spraying and all grapes are hand-harvested. 

The Kozlovic Malvazija is made from 100% Malvasia Istriana, fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks for a few months and then aged in bottle for another two months. A small percentage of Malvazija is fermented and aged in oak barrels, then added back to the wine. Highly aromatic, the wine displays notes of acacia flowers, peaches, apples and herbs. On the palate, the wine features a bold, refreshing acidity that is mouth-watering. There is a wonderful mineral complexity with a subtle salinity on the palate and finish.
