Babylonstoren Babel Red Blend — Western Cape, South Africa 2024

Babylonstoren is one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms in South Africa — set at the foot of Simonsberg in the Franschhoek wine valley, where the farm has been cultivating vines, fruit, and vegetables since the 17th century. The Babel Red Blend is the estate’s most ambitious expression: a nine-variety blend of Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir, and Marselan, each component aged separately in oak barrels before blending. The result is a wine of remarkable complexity and generosity for the price. 

Deep ruby in color. The nose is inviting and layered: ripe black fruit, dark plum, and a savory edge of cigar and warm spice. On the palate, it is dry and full-bodied, with a soft, juicy mouthfeel from careful oak aging and a lingering, fruit-forward finish that rewards every sip. The Chianti Classico Riserva is central to Badia a Coltibuono’s vision and its deep relationship with place and history. Producer Description 

Caribbean Cask has been matured in traditional oak whisky casks for 14 years, and then ‘finished’ in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. To create the ideal finish, Malt Master David Stewart filled American oak casks with his own blend of select West Indian rums. When he judged the casks to be ready, the rum was replaced with the 14 year old spirit and the wood was put to work adding the final touches.

The result is an exceptional single malt whisky with the traditional smooth, honeyed character of The Balvenie, married with notes of toffee and a hint of fruit, with a warm, lingering finish.
