James Suckling: 93 Points (prior vintage)

Mahi is the project of Brian Bicknell, one of Marlborough's most thoughtful and independent-minded winemakers. Where much of the region's Sauvignon Blanc is made in a loud, industrial style — cold-fermented in stainless steel to maximize tropical fruit and aromatic punch — Bicknell takes a fundamentally different approach. Drawing on what he calls a "chef's philosophy," he incorporates wild yeast ferments and aging in old oak barrels to build texture, complexity and genuine depth into a variety that is too often reduced to a single dimension. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc that stands apart: more sophisticated, more food-friendly and more interesting than the category norm.

The 2025 opens with an expressive and layered nose — lemon peel, grapefruit pith, apple blossom and pastry, with citrus and tropical notes woven through secondary characters that emerge from the wild ferments and barrel aging. The palate is elegant and well-structured, with a creamy, textural mid-palate that sets it apart from the region's stainless-steel standard. Bright acidity provides freshness and lift, while the long, complex finish reflects the care and intention behind the winemaking.

Serve well chilled at 46–50°F. One of the few Sauvignon Blancs with the weight and texture to handle lightly seared scallops or oysters without overpowering them. Also excellent with grilled fish, shellfish, fresh goat cheese (chèvre), Greek salad with feta, light pasta and herb-driven dishes.

Expert Review - Vintage 2023 

Vinous 93 Points | The 2023 Vouvray Sec Le Haut-Lieu is a pure, refined, seamless style with pear, pineapple and nectarine flavors. It boasts excellent clarity and refinement, with lovely freshness hailing from calibrated acidity that bursts through this blossoming wine. Considering this was only bottled three weeks before tasting, I’m very encouraged by the results.

Wine Spectator 92 Points | Fresh-crushed apple, quince and spice notes have an earthy dimension, with hints of roasted agave and wet soil. There's beautiful range and just enough plumpness to make this generous, yet it's held in check by a chalky mineral element and very fine tannins. Toasted almond and salted butter notes move in, with lime-edged acidity cleaning up the finish. Refined and complex. Drink now through 2037.

Ramey Cellars Chardonnay — Russian River Valley, Sonoma County 2023

David Ramey is one of California's most celebrated winemakers — a Burgundy-trained perfectionist who has spent decades proving that the Russian River Valley can produce Chardonnay of genuine world-class stature. The 2023 Russian River Valley Chardonnay is sourced from seven exceptional cool-climate vineyard sites — Lafranchi, Westside Farms, Sonoma Foothills, Martinelli Laughlin, Kilcullen, Dutton Sebastopol, and Frank Johnson — all planted on low-vigor Goldridge loam soils between 1978 and 2017. Whole-cluster pressed, native-yeast fermented, and aged 12 months on the lees in 10% new French oak, it is a Chardonnay of extraordinary intensity, purity, and precision. Decanter, The Wine Advocate, and Wine Spectator all awarded it 94–95 points. 

The nose is open and inviting: stone fruit, white peach, guava, macerated mango, and apricot, layered with exotic baking spices, toasted brioche, ginger, and honey. Vinous 93 Points | The 2021 Chardonnay Cordillera de los Andes comes from the Talinay vineyard in Limarí. 50% was aged in French barrels, 23% of them new. Yellow with a greenish sheen. The nose offers green apple notes with hints of pear, acacia, hazelnuts and a whiff of praline over a bed of oak. In the mouth it has a saline feel with a slightly creamy flow and pert freshness. Ken Forrester is widely regarded as the "King of Chenin" — no producer in South Africa has done more to champion the grape or elevate its reputation on the world stage. Founded in 1993 on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, the estate farms old vines on decomposed granite soils with the benefit of cooling maritime influences from False Bay. Expert Review - Vintage 2023 

The Wine Advocate 92 Points | I was able to taste the just-bottled 2023 Manoella Branco. This was a very balanced vintage, the growing season was almost perfect, and yields were good. The wine was a little closed for such an expressive year of wines with purity and freshness. It has notes of white flowers and fruit and a balsamic touch with the balance and harmony from the old vines.

Winemaker Description 

Vibrant and fresh wine with intense citric, floral and mineral notes. On the palate shows pure flavors and nice balance.

All grapes previously selected and de-stemmed were pressed on a pneumatic press and fermented on stainless steel tanks at low temperatures during 4 weeks, after which was aged sur lies during 6 months.

Decanter 96 Points (Clive Pursehouse) | "Quite the Chardonnay from Brianne Day and the renowned Eola Springs Vineyard in the best Chardonnay appellation in America." Three different blocks and three different clones: Hyde Wente, Mount Eden, and Dijon 96. Captivating lemon curd aromas and rich, honeyed apricots followed by almond pastry cream — dollops of rich lemon cream, ripe peach fuzz, and rich apricot flesh.

Winemaker Notes

Brianne Day chose three blocks and three clones from the gorgeous Eola Springs Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills to get to know the site intimately. Hyde Wente and Mount Eden (California heritage clones) were picked earlier for structure and acid; Dijon 96 was picked later for stone fruit and riper character.

The result is lively, lithe, and built on a solid mineral structure with a supple, glossy mid-palate. Lemon curd, peaches, river stones, lime zest, sweet orange, honeysuckle, and a hint of pastry all come to mind.

Complices de Loire La Grande Parcelle Chenin Blanc from Montlouis-sur-Loire, France. This is an elegant white wine made from the Chenin Blanc grape, typical of this Loire region. This wine offers a wonderful balance between freshness and complexity, with aromas of citrus fruits, peach and white flowers, as well as a mineral undertone that reflects the calcareous soils.

The wine has a lively acidity and a soft, refined structure, which provides a refreshing and well-balanced taste. It is an ideal accompaniment to fish dishes, shellfish or goat cheese. La Grande Parcelle is a beautiful representation of the terroir of Montlouis-sur-Loire, with a subtle but present depth.

Winemaker Description 

Moscato d’Asti D.O.C.G Grape variety: Moscato 100%

A bright straw-yellow color with slightly shimmering hints of gold. Intense aromas of ripe yellow fruit (peach, apricot), floral notes (rose petals, acacia flowers) and ginger. Sweet and delicate on the palate, with modest acidity, good balance and complexity.

Hints of fresh apricot on the finish.r

Sourced from small vineyards in Castiglione Tinella, with 4,500 plants per hectare. The vines, cultivated with the Guyot-system have an average age of 40 years.

Limestone- and clay-rich soil.

A percentage of around 5.5% alcohol by volume is reached, the temperature is quickly reduced to stop the fermentation.

The wine, which is only partially fermented, is then filtered. The wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation and is bottled using sterile filtration.

I’m thrilled to kick off 2025 by introducing my latest project: 67 Wine Somm Series Petit Moscato 2024.Once again, I’ve drawn inspiration from the vibrant and dynamic wine culture of NYC! The label design aligns seamlessly with the rest of our 67 Wine Petit Somm Series, maintaining a consistent and stylish aesthetic. Moscato is one of the most popular wine categories in New York, and my goal was to craft a wine that pairs an elegant label with authentic, high-quality juice.

Tasting Notes:

The wine presents a pale lemon-yellow hue with bright highlights. On the nose, it is intensely aromatic, as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is renowned for its fragrant character. The palate is lively, offering sweet, fresh fruit flavors of orange, honeydew melon, and peach. A subtle sweetness transitions beautifully into a finish accented with delicate notes of white blossom flowers.

In my view, this Moscato pairs perfectly with spicy Szechuan cuisine, Japanese and Indian dishes, tapas-style appetizers, blue cheeses, and chicken liver pâté.

Wine Spectator 91 Points | Distinctive and well-done, with a pronounced earthiness sharing the stage with notes of warm apple, quince and candied ginger in this late-release wine. Time has softened the acidity on a supple, savory palate, layering toasted brioche, brine and dried flower petal details. A hint of honey water graces the elegant, well-meshed finish. Michael Alberty of the Wine Enthusiast writes 93 Points | Every year I marvel at how such a marvelous Riesling can be $20. The Poet's Leap opens with an aromatic ode to lychee fruit, honeysuckle, almond butter and a wisp of petrol. Lemony acidity curls itself around flavors like green honeydew melon, rose water and the sweetness of a slice of peach pie. The 2023 is as good as any in recent memory. Mercy.

Vinous 90 Points | The 2023 Riesling Poet's Leap is delicate and understated, with notes of shaved lemon zest, green melon, mint and hints of petrol. It mixes ripe orchard fruits and salty mineral tones with a core of brilliant acidity. This finishes with medium length and remarkable lift, leaving a suggestion of citrus sorbet on the finish.

Winemaker Description 

This is Lauer’s Platonic ideal of what a Saar Riesling should be. If we were in Burgundy this would be the equivalent of a Bourgogne Blanc.

As an appellation-level wine, it is sourced from multiple vineyards in three different villages of the Saar. This is always a thrilling off-dry and a silly value.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Rkatsiteli — Finger Lakes, New York 2024

Dr. Konstantin Frank is the founding father of the American vinifera movement — the visionary who, in 1957, planted the first European vinifera vines in the Eastern United States on the southwestern hills of Keuka Lake and ignited a revolution that forever changed New York wine. Four generations later, the Frank family remains the benchmark for Finger Lakes winemaking — and this Rkatsiteli is their most ancient and extraordinary expression. Rkatsiteli is a Georgian grape variety dating back to 3000 B.C., making it one of the oldest known cultivated grapes in the world. The 2024 is crafted as an amber wine with one month of skin contact — a nod to the ancient Georgian qvevri tradition — resulting in a wine of striking complexity, texture, and depth. 

The nose is arresting and aromatic: toasted orange peel, macerated apricot, orchard blossoms, fresh ginger, and cardamom.
