Expert Reviews

Falstaff Magazine - Harmonious aromas with notes of vanilla, sweet dried fruit, coffee, citrus and sherry nuances. Also very harmonious in the mouth with a sweet opening and an intense taste experience through to the long, spicy-sweet finish. - 94

Wine Enthusiast - Silky and downright succulent, this Scotch is made with two types of oak casks—as the DoubleWood name suggests—but it's really all about the influence of the ex-Sherry cask. Aromas suggest golden raisins and dried apricots. The silky palate starts out moderately smoky, but glides into a richer, honeyed, nutty profile that finishes with cocoa and clove accents.

Producer Description

The Balvenie DoubleWood is a 12 year old Single Malt which gains its Distinctive Character from being matured in two woods. During its period of maturation The Balvenie DoubleWood is transferred from a Traditional Oak whisky cask to a First Fill Spanish Oak Sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt- the traditional casks, having previously held Bourbon, soften and add character, whilst the Sherry Wood brings depth and fullness of flavour.

Producer Description

Most tequila is aged in common American oak. Conversely, ours is aged exclusively in premium toasted, not charred, French Oak Barrels for a more complex flavor profile. These refined, rich, elegant flavors create an aromatic essence that is distinctively Casa Noble.

We nurture and harvest our 100% Blue Weber agave in the rich, volcanic soil of our high-altitude fields, tended to until they reach full maturity.

Tasting Notes:  Remarkably complex, our Añejo tequila is an elegant and aromatic expression, created with both patience and extreme attention to detail.

Expert Review

Wine Enthusiast 90 Points | After an initial touch of agave, most of the flavor is on the big caramel finish. This is not a bad thing. Vibrant yellow, mild smoky scent, smooth texture.

Expert Review

Wine Enthusiast 90 Points | Bright topaz in the glass, this 12-year-old blend of over 40 whiskies has a pleasant fresh apple and vanilla scent. Polished, versatile and flavorful, look for creamy caramel and vanilla accented by dried orange peel and honeysuckle. - K.N.

Laphroaig 10 Year Old — The Most Richly Flavoured of All Scotch Whiskies

From the remote southern shore of Islay — an island whose name means "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay" in Gaelic — comes one of the world’s most distinctive and beloved single malts. Laphroaig (pronounced La-froyg) is not a whisky that asks for your approval. It announces itself boldly and leaves a lasting impression.

Malted barley dried over Islay’s unique peat fires gives Laphroaig its unmistakable character: a deep, pungent smoke layered with seaweed, campfire ash, and smoked fish on the nose, followed by a palate of earthy sweetness, toasted barley, and a long, oily, medicinal finish that Islay devotees find utterly irreplaceable.

El Tesoro Reposado is a benchmark Highlands tequila from one of Mexico's most storied distilling families — the Camarenas of La Alteña Distillery in the Jalisco Highlands. Crafted from 100% blue Weber agave, slowly crushed by a traditional volcanic stone tahona wheel, and aged 8 to 11 months in American oak barrels — well beyond the two-month legal minimum — this is a Reposado of uncommon depth, texture, and authenticity.

The nose is warm and inviting: cooked agave, vanilla, and toasted oak mingle with a gentle earthiness that speaks directly to the terroir of the Highlands. On the palate, the wine is round and richly layered, with caramel, dried fruit, and a whisper of baking spice, all carried by a long, smooth finish with lingering sweetness. Mellow and balanced, yet never soft — this is tequila with something to say.

The tahona process — labor-intensive and increasingly rare — extracts maximum flavor and complexity from the roasted piñas, yielding a spirit that is earthy, textured, and deeply expressive. A true sipping tequila, best enjoyed neat or on the rocks to appreciate its full character.

Exceptional in a premium Tommy's Margarita or Paloma. Pairs beautifully with grilled meats, dark chocolate, and aged cheeses.

Producer Description

The Volstead Act of 1920 which initiated Prohibition in the USA granted permits to six distillers in Kentucky to continue to bottle bourbon for medicinal purposes. Through one of these permits, Old Forester continued to be produced as medicinal whiskey on Louisville’s famed Whiskey Row. It is the only bourbon continuously sold by the same company that has been available for sale before, during and after Prohibition.

During this time, all whiskies had to be bottled at 100 Proof. With a barrel entry proof of 100, the “angel’s share” would have created a 115 proof whiskey after maturation. To pay homage to this era, Old Forester presents 1920 Prohibition Style Bourbon at 115 proof to represent the rich flavor profile this bourbon had nearly 100 years ago.

An intense medley of cherry preserves, drippy caramel, dark chocolate, thickened maple syrup and seasoned oak spiciness.

Nikka Whisky Days 80 Proof 750ml

Nikka Whisky was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru — the father of Japanese whisky, who studied distillation in Scotland and brought that knowledge home to build one of Japan’s two great whisky empires. Today, Nikka operates two legendary distilleries: Yoichi on Hokkaido’s rugged northern coast, and Miyagikyo in the lush mountain valley of Sendai — each producing whiskies of distinctly different character that the master blenders artfully combine. Nikka Days was created with a clear mission: whisky for every day, approachable and joyful without sacrificing the craft that defines Nikka.

The result is a beautifully balanced blend of mellow grain whiskies and slightly peated malts — silky, floral, and fruit-forward, with a delicate complexity that rewards sipping neat or shines in a Japanese highball. The round bottle and vibrant label are no accident: this is a whisky designed to brighten your day, whatever the occasion.

Producer Description

Gin flavored with handpicked juniper berries from its Hamptons estate, cardamom, cumin, coriander, fennel and anise. The most eye-catching detail about this spirit is definitely its trendy pink color, which winemaker and partner Roman Roth gets by using the vineyard's rosé wine as the base for the gin. Once the rosé is distilled, Roth adds a small amount of grape skin extract to get that subtle pink color.

Interlaced layers of buttercream, sticky toffee, cedar, and apricot. Smooth, well rounded mingling of sweet oatmeal raisin cookie and milk chocolate leading into caramel corn and evolving spice. Charred oak leads with a clean peripheral spice.

Appleton Estate 12 Year Old Rare Cask — Nassau Valley, Jamaica

Appleton Estate is Jamaica's oldest and most celebrated rum producer — founded in 1749 in the Nassau Valley of St. Elizabeth Parish, where the Black River winds through a lush, fertile valley that has been producing exceptional rum for over 275 years. The estate grows its own sugarcane, mills it on-site, and distills, ages, and bottles entirely on the property — one of the few true estate rums in the world, with complete control over every step of production. The tropical Jamaican climate is one of rum's great natural advantages: the heat accelerates aging, the humidity draws spirit into the wood, and the result is a depth and complexity that would take decades to achieve in a cooler climate. The 12 Year Old Rare Cask is the true expression of master blender Joy Spence's passion and craft — a superb blend of rare, hand-selected rums, each aged for a minimum of 12 years in the tropical Jamaican climate, delivering a smooth and sophisticated expression of what aged Jamaican rum can achieve at its finest.

The nose is rich and inviting: toasted oak, dried fruit, and hazelnut, with layers of complexity that unfold with time in the glass. On the palate, it is smooth and sophisticated — dark cocoa, delicate molasses, orange peel, rich vanilla, and hints of coffee, all in perfect balance. A long, warming finish that speaks to 12 years of patient tropical aging. Sip neat, over a large ice cube, or in a premium cocktail.

Recommended pairing: Ideal for dinking by itself, as an aperitif or digestif. It is recommended paired with light foods like fish, seafood, or chicken, although its intensity also mixes well with complex flavors.

La Gritona | Reposado | 100% Blue Agave | Jalisco Highlands, Mexico | NOM 1533

67Wine Staff Pick — Oscar Garcia Moncada: One of my favorite sipping Reposado Tequilas on the market. Subtle notes of citrus with cooked nopales. Great for sipping or mixed in your favorite cocktails.

La Gritona is the passion project of Melly Cardenas, a female distiller working out of a small, fiercely independent distillery (NOM 1533) in the highlands of Jalisco — one of Mexico's most celebrated tequila-producing regions, known for its red volcanic soils and the exceptional quality of its blue agave. Everything about La Gritona is intentional and hands-on: from the agave harvested at peak sugar production and delivered to the ovens within 24 hours of cutting, to the hand-blown recycled glass bottles made by artisans in the Guadalajara neighborhood of Tlaquepaque.

The agave is baked in thick-walled earthen ovens for 24 hours, then rested for another 24 hours before crushing. The collected juice is allowed to ferment naturally — at a rate dictated solely by the surrounding air temperature, with no added yeasts or shortcuts. The fermented liquid is distilled twice, then rested for 8 months in reused American whiskey barrels before filtering and bottling. Every step of production takes place under one roof, overseen by a small team of local staff. Agave remnants are given to local farmers as cattle feed — nothing goes to waste.

The result is a Reposado of genuine character: subtle and distinctive, with the warmth and depth of barrel aging balanced by the bright, vegetal freshness of highland agave. The nose offers cooked agave, citrus peel and a whisper of vanilla and oak. The palate is smooth and approachable, with flavors of roasted agave, nopales, citrus and gentle spice, leading to a clean, lingering finish. Exceptional for sipping neat or on the rocks, and equally at home in a premium cocktail.

Château de Laubade · Bas Armagnac · VSOP · Gascony, France · 750ml

Château de Laubade is one of the great estates of Bas-Armagnac — the most prestigious sub-region of the Armagnac appellation, located in the heart of Gascony in southwest France. Founded in 1870 and spanning over 400 hectares, Laubade is the largest single-estate producer in the appellation, farming its own vineyards and distilling exclusively on-site using traditional Armagnac alembic stills. Armagnac is France’s oldest brandy, predating Cognac by over a century, and Bas-Armagnac is its finest expression — lighter, more aromatic, and more terroir-driven than its more famous cousin. The VSOP is a blend of eaux-de-vie aged a minimum of four years in Gascon black oak, developing the complexity and elegance that has made Laubade a benchmark for the category. At $42.99, this is one of the most compelling values in aged French brandy.

Warm amber in the glass with a soft, inviting nose of ripe stone fruit, vanilla, dried plum, and a delicate floral lift — elegant and approachable from the first pour. On the palate: smooth and round, with flavors of ripe apricot, vanilla bean, and plum, framed by gentle spice and the subtle earthiness of Gascon oak. The finish is long, soft, and warming — a digestif of genuine refinement. Serve neat in a tulip glass after dinner, or pair with honey-glazed cheese, wild strawberries, or a light espresso. Also exceptional as the base for a classic Armagnac Sour or Gascon Old Fashioned.
