Spirits

Expert Reviews

The Wine Enthusiast 90 Points | The name of this whisky has nothing to do with coffee—rather, it's named for a type of still invented by Aneas Coffey, which is used to make this golden spirit. It offers mild vanilla-pear aromatics and is relatively light and silky on the palate. Look for a light vanilla sweetness at first, which gives way to a rounded dark chocolate note and baking spice finish. Recommended for highballs and other mixed drinks.

Producer Description

Coffey Malt is made from 100% malted barley. However it is not categorized as “malt whisky” but as “grain whisky” since it is not distilled in a pot still. This unique production method results in extraordinary flavors and texture.

Memo Summary Notes

The Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky is a unique and celebrated expression from Japan that defies traditional Scotch-style categorizations. While it is made from 100% malted barley, it is classified simply as "Whisky" (rather than Single Malt) because it is distilled in a Coffey still (a traditional column still) rather than a pot still.

The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak is the cornerstone expression of one of Scotland's most celebrated distilleries — a whisky that has defined the benchmark for sherry-matured single malt Scotch for generations. Crafted entirely in hand-picked, seasoned Spanish oak sherry casks from Jerez, this is a whisky of remarkable depth, warmth, and consistency.

On the nose, rich mahogany tones give way to aromas of dried fruits, toffee, and warming ginger, with a gentle undercurrent of clove and sherry sweetness. The palate is full and generous — layers of concentrated caramel, butterscotch, and custard unfold alongside ripe apricot and a subtle citrus lift of orange peel. The finish is medium-long, spiced, and satisfying, with a lingering touch of sherry oak and sweet wood.

"Look for a rich butterscotch scent and a hint of fresh apricot. On the palate, this Sherry-matured single malt layers on concentrated caramel, butterscotch and custard, finishing long and spiced on a hint of orange peel."

Producer Description

Port Charlotte 10 year old is conceived, distilled, matured and bottled only on Islay. Made from 100% Scottish barley, it is trickle distilled through tall, narrow-necked stills for a balanced, heathery style of barbeque smoke.

Our Port Charlotte 10 year old expression is everything an Islay whisky can and should be.

With an ambition to make the ultimate “Islay” whisky, this is a single malt made by people not software; a whisky watched over every day of its maturing life by those who made it; a whisky born of a community with a vision and a mission to kick start a single malt whisky revolution. This Port Charlotte 10 year old is who we are. This is where we’re from.

We believe an “Islay” whisky should live and breathe the fresh salt tang of Islay air, all its life. This is not a spirit distilled on the island and immediately shipped off to the mainland to mature in an undisclosed warehouse.

This is a spirit born from the island and the community, a true expression of the land, the culture, the people.

Memo Summary Notes

Bruichladdich is known for transparency; this expression is non-chill filtered and coloring-free, distilled, matured, and bottled exclusively on Islay.

Still quite fiery, this eau de vie will become more complex after a few minutes breathing in your glass.

Producer Description

This is a Tequila with no dilution or filtration with authentic proceedings honoring the founder, Salvador Rosales Briseno. First impression fragrant strong of cooked agave, pepper and fresh herbs.

After opening, the aromas shift to cardamom, nuts, coffee, honey and butter. Without losing the dry mineral earth characteristics synonymous with Lowland Tequila. The first taste is a vibrantly refreshing with flavors of mint and fresh herbs with the contrast of bitter and sweet extending into the mouth. Honey and ripe fruits leave your palate with a sweet warmth.

Expert Review

Wine Enthusiast 94 Points | The name of this whisky is a nod to how it s matured in three different casks: American Bourbon, Spanish oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherry. It s robust, with a deep amber hue and rich caramel scent. The flavor profile shows toffee, campfire smoke and a mouthwatering butterscotch note on the exhale. It almost reads like a peated Bourbon.

Quinta Ruban 14 year has spent 10 years maturing in American white oak casks, before being transferred into specially selected ruby port pipes from the Quintas or wine estates of Portugal.

Expert Review

Whisky Advocate 92 Points | This Quinta Ruban succeeds the 12 year old version, adding two additional years of finishing in port casks, while maintaining the same bargain price. The result is a symphony of understated opulence. Marzipan, fresh apple and pear, milk chocolate, red berries, candied ginger, and praline on the nose build slowly, leading into a fruity, spiced palate. Flavors of soft gingerbread, molasses cake, cherry pie, spiced plums, almond nougat, and dark chocolate intermingle with faint strains of pipe tobacco. It sings on the finish, with a parting crescendo of hazelnut, spice, cigar wrapper, and lengthy oak.

Oban Little Bay Small Cask — Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Oban is one of Scotland’s oldest and most storied distilleries, founded in 1794 on the rugged west coast of the Highlands — a town and a distillery that grew up together. Perched between the mountains and the sea, Oban occupies a unique geographic position that gives its whisky a character unlike any other: maritime and coastal, yet rich and warming, with none of the heavy peat of the islands. Little Bay is Oban’s small cask expression — matured in a combination of small casks including American oak, European oak, and small refill casks, which accelerate maturation and impart exceptional depth and complexity. The result is a whisky of remarkable richness and approachability, with a medium to rich body and good viscosity that makes it one of the most satisfying drams in the Highland canon.

The nose opens with rich nuttiness balanced by ripe orchard fruits — inviting and layered. On the palate, chewy fruit bread, orange spice, and crisp green apple give way to a long, elegant finish of dark chocolate tannins. A whisky that rewards both the newcomer and the seasoned collector.

Expesrt Review

95 Points Wine Enthusiast | The succulent aroma develops with aeration in the sweet forms of barley, cream, light caramel, and a trace of tropical fruit. Palate entry is round, borderline plump, breakfast-cereal sweet, and honeyed; at midpalate, there's a slightly oily peat smoke. Sweetly concludes with the focus on the malt. Best Buy. Range: 90-95.

Producer Description

A rich dried-fruit sweetness with clouds of smoke and strong barley-malt flavours, warming and intense. Peppery at the back of the mouth. Kilchoman was founded in 2005 on the remote western shore of Islay — the first farm distillery built on the island in over 124 years. Anthony Wills set out to make whisky the old-fashioned way: growing barley on site, floor malting a portion of the production, and distilling in small batches with an obsessive focus on quality over volume. In just two decades, Kilchoman has become one of the most exciting names in Scotch, earning a devoted following among those who believe Islay deserves more than one or two great distilleries.

Machir Bay is their flagship — named after the two kilometres of wild, wind-swept beach on Islay’s west coast where turbulent Atlantic seas meet stunningly beautiful sunsets. A vatting of bourbon and sherry cask maturations, it is designed to showcase the full Kilchoman character: peated, coastal, and layered. The nose opens with lemon zest, vanilla, and a distinct maritime influence, giving way to floral intensity, juicy peach, and pear. The palate is generous — tropical fruit, dried sultanas, warming smoke, honey, malt, and butterscotch. The finish is long and complex, with sherry-soaked fruit, cracked black pepper, sea salt, and waves of citrus sweetness underpinned by maritime peat smoke.

“The dramatic coastal landscape of Machir Bay is reflected in the rugged complexity of this award-winning single malt, the flagship of the Kilchoman range.” — Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder

Producer Description

At PM Spirits, we're always on the lookout not just for superlative spirits, but also for like-minded people. When we met Jose Luis Gutierrez, we knew right away he was someone special.

Having spent years working both independently and for the Mexican Trade Commission throughout Europe – promoting and establishing reciprocity of the Tequila Denomination of Origin – Jose Luis later started working closely with producers in Jalisco in order to source and provide quality Tequila directly to European brands and bottlers.

We had been wanting to collaborate with someone on bottling a PM Spirits Project Tequila for quite some time. Jose Luis' passion for and knowledge of the spirit was apparent to us from day one, and we could think of no better person to have worked with to make this project happen. Thank you, Jose Luis.

This Tequila is the product of one single oven or horno. It was distilled from 100% estate-grown Blue Weber Agave. Bottled at two strengths – 80 proof and still strength 110 proof. No additives.

Highland Park 12 Year Old — Orkney Islands, Scotland

Highland Park is one of Scotland's most celebrated and distinctive single malt distilleries — located on the remote Orkney Islands at the very northern tip of Scotland, where the wild Atlantic climate, ancient Viking heritage, and unique local heather peat combine to create a whisky unlike any other. Founded in 1798, Highland Park is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries and one of the few remaining to still malt a portion of its own barley over Orcadian peat — a practice that gives the whisky its signature balance of honeyed sweetness and gentle, aromatic smoke. The 12 Year Old is the distillery's flagship expression: aged in a combination of sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, it is regularly celebrated in spirits competitions worldwide for its uncompromising quality and exquisite balance.

The color is warm amber. The nose is vivid and inviting: crème brûlée, tangerine, charred peach, and smoked kindling, with a light, briny vanilla character and a rising veil of smoke. The Dalmore 12 is recognized as a whisky with character far beyond its age. The spirit is initially matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks, yielding soft vanilla and honey notes. A proportion of the spirit is then finessed in pinnacle Sherry casks, including 30-Year Old Matusalem Oloroso casks, exclusive to The Dalmore, to give the whisky a rich, nutty character.

Expert Review

Forbes Magazine: This is an exceptionally smooth Cognac. Matured for four years. On the nose, it offers up rich floral aromas of violet, jasmine, roses, white flowers and peonies, along with intense fruity notes of sweet caramel apples, honey and both fresh and dried fruit, especially prune, peach and apricot, along with Sauterne like notes of golden raisin and fig, as well as some passion fruit and a touch of vanilla. There is also an earthy, black tea like quality in the background, and a hint of waxiness.

Recently, Camus, the largest of the family owned Cognac producers, released a new addition to its core range of Cognacs—labeled Intensely Aromatic. The Cognacs were the culmination of a two-decade long effort to craft Cognacs that are notably more aromatic and flavorful than the norm.

Camus’ Cognacs have always had a reputation for being particularly aromatic. To further enhance that character Camus developed a proprietary distillation protocol, which it calls “Intensity,” that measurably increases the concentration of terpenes and esters in their Cognac, producing what the company describes as an “instant of intensity.”

Terpenes are a large and diverse class of organic compounds, produced by a variety of plants. They are closely associated with floral aromas. Esters are chemicals produced by the interaction of alcohols and fatty acids, and are closely associated with fruity aromas.

In crafting Intensely Aromatic, the firm utilized older casks made from lightly toasted, fine grained oak. The age and toasting of the casks minimized the aroma and flavor components that were contributed by the cask wood and further enhanced the prominence of fruit and floral aromas.

Producer Description

On the nose, this whiskey offers notes of over-ripe cherry, sweet apples, raisins, almonds, leather and fresh-cut hay. On the palate, it shows honey, cherries, blackcurrant and fig, with a nutty brine and walnut characteristics. Buttery caramel, whipped creme, brown sugar and smoked cayenne come through on the finish.
