Michter’s Original Sour Mash Whiskey is one of the great American whiskey comeback stories. During the 1970s and 1980s it was the distillery’s single most popular product — then it disappeared from the market in 1989 when the original distillery closed. After 23 years of absence, it made a triumphant return in 2012 as part of the U.S.*1 small-batch line, and whiskey enthusiasts have never looked back. Unlike bourbon or rye, Michter’s Sour Mash occupies its own category: a unique grain selection and the traditional sour mash process — where previously fermented mash acts as a starter for the new fermentation, much like sourdough bread — produce a whiskey of singular character that defies easy classification. The Tasting Panel awarded it 97 points. Wine Enthusiast gave it 93. At under $50, it is one of the most compelling values in American whiskey.

The nose is a showstopper: cherry, toasty vanilla biscuit, and warm burnt sugar. On the palate, a generous stream of flavors unfolds — egg cream, maple syrup, burnt orange peel, cinnamon, gingerbread, ripe peach, and sandalwood — with a long, mellow finish of vanilla, oak, and a faint cherry essence that lingers beautifully. Smooth, buttery, and deeply satisfying.

Soft, sweet butterscotch and orange peel meet poached pears and stone fruits. Earthiness appears as dried autumn leaves, coffee, old oak, and tobacco. Among the tangle of spices, tasters identified chili pepper, allspice, cloves, and universally adored its ginger note. Finally, wisps of smoke and sea salt. Overall, it feels generously malty, with the grain whisky lending broad sweetness and supple mouthfeel across the long finish. Nikka From The Barrel, according to those behind it, was first introduced into Japan back in 1986, and is considered a coveted expression for travelers to bring back from its homeland. It is a Japanese blended whisky, bringing together a very complex mix of more than 100 different batches of malt whisky and grain whisky produced at Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, and aged in multiple types of casks: ex-bourbon barrels and puncheons, ex-sherry butts, and refilled, recharred and remade hogsheads. While non-age statement in nature, importer Hotaling & Co. did note the blend undergoes three to six months of additional aging at Nikka’s aging cellar to help in the marriage of flavors. Wine Enthusiast 95 Points | No shrinking violet, this copper penny-hued Scotch hits the nose and palate with a robust but harmonious mix of toffee and peat smoke, in equal measures, finishing dry and spicy. Darkest is an apt description for a whiskey partly matured in former oloroso Sherry casks, which adds deep, raisiny tones.

Our small batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeys are offered as a Small Batch, up to 12 barrels per batch, which was the result of one fermenter. The goal of the Small Batch is to capture the total essence of more complex notes from multiple barrels from distillate of the same fermenter. Weve decided to release the Small Batch Bourbon as a Bottled in Bond so fans of our Wheated Single Barrel Bourbon can do a side-by-side comparison.

Our Small Batch release mash bill is 64 percent corn, 24 percent rye and 12 percent malted barley using our yeast strains. We entered the cooper select, toasted and #4 char barrel at 110 proof after coming off the still around 137 proof. All of our whiskeys are aged and matured on our 168-acre campus inside any one of our six rickhouses. We have more than 100,000 barrels aging onsite.

Wine Enthusiast 94 Points | The name of this whisky is a nod to how it s matured in three different casks: American Bourbon, Spanish oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherry. It s robust, with a deep amber hue and rich caramel scent. The flavor profile shows toffee, campfire smoke and a mouthwatering butterscotch note on the exhale. It almost reads like a peated Bourbon.

Orchard fruit notes are common to both Calvados and Scotch malt whisky. Many Calvados producers double-distil in pot stills, just like their Scottish cousins. Maturation in French oak is another aspect of their shared DNA.

Michter’s U.S. 1 Unblended American Whiskey — Louisville, Kentucky | 41.7% ABV

Michter’s U.S. 1 Unblended American Whiskey is one of the most distinctive and misunderstood bottles in American whiskey — and one of the most rewarding. Unlike Bourbon, which by law must be aged in new, charred American oak, Michter’s Unblended American is aged in used, whiskey-soaked barrels, producing a spirit that sits in its own category: richer, more spirit-forward, and free from the constraints of any legal definition. Crucially, it never contains grain neutral spirits — hence the “unblended” distinction that sets it apart from blended American whiskeys. In late 2013, Master Distiller Willie Pratt re-released the U.S. 1 after a nearly three-year absence, declaring it “just right” and “the best it’s ever been.”

The nose is warm and generous: caramel popcorn, butterscotch, and dried fruits with a gentle lift of cinnamon and nutmeg spice. On the palate, it is smooth and approachable — the used-barrel aging delivering a rounder, more mellow character than a typical Bourbon, with a long, warming finish that rewards slow sipping. It offers mild vanilla-pear aromatics and is relatively light and silky on the palate. Look for a light vanilla sweetness at first, which gives way to a rounded dark chocolate note and baking spice finish. Recommended for highballs and other mixed drinks.
