This is a single malt from the Yoichi distillery, Nikka's first distillery built in 1934. The founder Masataka Taketsuru chose Yoichi in Hokkaido because of the similar environmental conditions to Scotland, where he learned whisky making.

Yoichi single malt has pleasant peaty notes and smokiness originating from the traditional direct coal-fired distillation as well as a briny hint delivered by the sea breeze during the aging process.

Some bottles carry history in them. Dubonnet Rouge has been poured at European tables since 1846 — a fortified aperitif born in Bordeaux, beloved by royalty, and as relevant today as it was in the Belle Époque. Crafted from a proprietary blend of red wine, herbs, spices, and a touch of quinine, it occupies a singular space between wine and spirit, bitter and sweet.

In the glass, it is scarlet red with dark highlights. The nose is warmly herbal — dried fruit, sweet spice, and a hint of orange peel. On the palate, autumnal fruit tones lead to a pleasantly bitter, lingering finish that awakens the appetite exactly as a great aperitif should.

The May 2015 inaugural release of Michter's US1 Barrel Strength Rye marked yet another milestone in that quest. For maturation, the Rye distillate is entered into the barrel at 103 proof, rather than a more industry standard higher proof.
