Expert Reviews - Vintage 2023

James Suckling 96 Points | The density and balance are so attractive here, with sliced apples, white pineapple and crushed stones. Hints of dried flowers, too, such as white roses and lilacs, as well as almonds. Medium-bodied with focus and subtle strength. Seemingly endless, with a bitter-lemon edge and nice reduction in the aftertaste of gun metal. Drink and enjoy.

Decanter 94 Points | Drouhin's Clos des Mouches 2023 exemplifies the vintage's potential for delicious whites. The wine has lush, forward aromas of Mirabelle plums and quince with hints of marzipan, butter and a suggestion of stylishly smoky reduction. The texture is supple and dense, but the richness is kept in balance and the extract carries the wine to a lingering finish. Parts of the 7ha vineyard have been replanted; the old vines that produce this bottling have delivered a wine of great character.

The Wine Advocate 93-94 Points | The 2023 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc (Domaine) is another strong performance, delivering aromas of sweet pear, peach and mandarin mingled with buttered toast and mint. Full-bodied, rich and ample, it's layered and unctuous, with a seamless, satiny, textural profile and a long, lusty finish.

The Wine Spectator 92 Points | Stylish and graceful, this white evokes lemon, apple, white flower and honey aromas and flavors. Almost seamless in its texture and balance, with finely meshed acidity providing lift and freshness. Excellent length.

Winemaker Notes

An outstanding wine. Pale yellow color. Complex floral nose of white lilac and white rose. Once open, fruity aromas come to the fore, evolving towards grilled hazelnut and almond. When the wine is more mature, the nose is surprisingly strong and fifteen minutes of aeration produce wonderful notes of white truffle, citron (cedrat), honey and nutmeg, elegantly meshed together. Very lively on the palate. Its rich texture is in evidence, but also its structure and minerality. It is round, but never heavy. Harmonious fullness in the aftertaste. This wine allies remarkably the complexity and elegance of a Bâtard-Montrachet with the power of a Corton-Charlemagne.

Winemaker Description 

Kisi is one an indigenous varietal native of the Republic of Georgia. Petnat also known as "Petulant Natural Method Ancestral" is the original sparkling wine. Kisi is farmed in a biodynamic, regenerative vineyard planted over a dried up river bed.

The fruit is hand harvested and the wine is skin contact macerated in qvevri. Qvevri's are amphora buried in ground to control their temperature. Once the is done its maceration and still undergoing spontaneous, wild yeast fermentation, its bottled prematurely without additives and allowed to finish its fermentation in the bottle.

This Kisi has a fine bubbles, is dry and textured from skin contact, with crisp green apple and pear aromas and flavors. A fabulous alternative to Champagne.

About the Wine

Planted in the late 1970s, these rare, near-extinct vines with massive, gnarly trunks produce unique and fascinating fruit. Since Jolie-Laide’s first Fanucchi Wood Road Trousseau Gris bottling in 2010, the wines have shown a strong structural foundation with vintage-driven character.

In 2024, Mother Nature yielded half the fruit of 2023 — making this Trousseau Gris as rare as the old vines that produced it. To preserve natural acidity, the grapes were harvested early and foot-stomped for a three-day whole-cluster cold soak. This gentle maceration adds subtle phenolic texture, lifted aromatics, and a gorgeous rose-gold hue. The juice was then moved to a combination of neutral puncheon and stainless steel for a slow, cold native yeast fermentation, followed by a 6-month élevage in neutral puncheons and barrique to preserve freshness.

The Melon hails from the decomposed granite and limestone soils of the Chalone appellation, on a high elevation south-facing site planted in 1985 by the legendary DIck Graff. Overlooking Monterey from the east side of Salinas Valley, the site benefits from diurnal swings of warm days, cool nights, and a balanced coastal influence. This unique terroir offers excellent drainage and mineral-rich soils, ideal for producing wines of freshness, focus, and minerality. The fruit was whole-cluster pressed, settled, and transferred to concrete eggs and stainless steel for fermentation before aging for 6-months on lees in concrete eggs. The Wine Enthusiast 91 Points | This Sauvignon Blanc- dominated blend is lively and fresh, with loads of honeysuckle and ripe peach aromas from the Viognier mingling with classic grapefruit and lime elements. The palate is rich, with some Sémillon adding structure and breadth.

A wine with a Mediterranean charcter born from the combination of an indigenous grape variety, Inzolia, and the most important international white grape variety, Chardonnay. Intense aromas of flowers and white pulp fruit, from peach to golden aplle. Full and vibrant sip, with a persistent final return of citrus notes. The sculpture of prickly pears on the label is by great ceramist Giocamo Alessi from Caltagirone.

Jeb Dunnuck 93 Points | The 2022 Château La Tour Blanche is juicy and lively, with an exotic nose of honeyed orange, white chocolate, flowers, and hints of mint. It's a rich, unctuous, fleshy, full-bodied Sauternes that brings incredible opulence while staying nicely balanced and relatively light on its feet.

Golden yellow color. Intense aroma dominated by the fruit, highlighting the peach and grapefruit. It has an easily noticeable acidity, involved in the volume and body of the wine. These taste sensations, together with the retro nasal aroma, give it personality and a long final persistence.

The name Contrade (Latin for parcel of land) refers to vineyards bordered by olive trees, stone walls or other natural features that become identifiable by their name. The Falvo family, of Masseria Li Veli work with their partner growers for the Contrade project. The white wine is 100% Chardonnay grown in sandy and limestone soils an excellent place to best express its bouquet, fresh with crisp acidity and easy to drink.

The Wine Enthusiast 90 Points Aleks Zecevic | A whiff of rose water is followed by nectarine and apricot notes in this nicely balanced Spätlese. It's on the rich side, with submerged acidity, but the finish is lasting and inviting.

This wine displays a pale straw colour with brilliant green edge. On the nose the wine
opens with crisp green apple and lime blossom. This evolves to incorporate a complex
melange of lemongrass, petrichor and subtle blackcurrant leaf. The palate is bright
and refreshing with a focussed tension that suggests longevity and a characteristic
oyster shell salinity.

Food pairing: Best served cold and drunk as an aperitif or with fresh summer oysters,
fresh grilled yellowtail with salsa verde or salmon roses with kewpie mayo and caviar.

Umani Ronchi Casal di Serra Verdicchio Vecchie Vigne — Marche 2022

Umani Ronchi's Casal di Serra Vecchie Vigne is the pinnacle of the estate's Verdicchio program — and the 2022 vintage is a stunning expression of what old vines can achieve. Sourced from parcels planted in the early 1970s on the Montecarotto farm in the Marche, the wine is fermented in concrete tanks with native yeasts and aged at length in bottle to develop its signature fullness and complexity. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 93 points, calling it "a wine that is as much of a feeling as it is tasty." A benchmark Verdicchio at an honest price.

The nose is a flower shop: mixed blossoms, green herbs, lemon oil, and white gravel. On the palate, the texture is extraordinary — a seamless, hugging mouthfeel with a pleasant pithy bitterness and a long, sea-salty mineral finish. It delivers the depth and elegance that only old-vine Verdicchio can achieve, and will drink beautifully through 2035.

A 93-point Verdicchio from one of the Marche's most celebrated estates — Umani Ronchi's Vecchie Vigne is the benchmark for what old-vine Verdicchio can be.

Expert Review - Vintage 2022 

Luis Gutierez of The Wine Advocate writes 92 Points | The white 2022 Terroir Històric Blanc is the regional wine that blends grapes from nine different villages, 75% Garnacha Blanca and 25% Macabeo from different soils, slate, clay, granite and alluvial. The bunches fermented for three to five days in stainless steel, and the wine matured in stainless steel for six months. It has 13% alcohol and mellow acidity, 4.5 grams. It has a spectacular nose that is very expressive, aromatic, clean and open with pungent notes of pollen and beeswax. It's juicy, round and clean with persistent and pungent flavors, not very high in acidity, eminently Mediterranean. Really impressive.

Winemaker Description 

Mülheimer Sonnenlay Riesling Zeppelin has amaizing aromas of apple, citrus and slate stone with clean and pure structure. The wine has a mineral texture with rich mouth-filling flavours of orchard fruits and juicy layers.

Shows as well zesty and spicy refreshing style. Well balanced structure, animating and the elegant fruit acid finishes with great length.

The estate of Max Ferdinand Richter has been owned by the Richter family for more than 300 years. Today this enterprise, owned and run by winemaker Dirk Richter, is one of the leading producers of top Rieslings in the heart of the central Mosel area with total holdings of 43 acres and an annual production of about 10,500 cases. Richter produces fine wines that are well known throughout the world. They produce a wide variety of wines from estate-grown grapes that reflect the individual style of each single vineyard. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally fresh weathering grey slate.

A California Chardonnay benchmark in a generous magnum format — J. Lohr Riverstone Chardonnay 2023 comes from the cool-climate Arroyo Seco appellation in Monterey County, where the Ventana winds off Monterey Bay slow ripening and preserve natural acidity. The result is a full-bodied, richly textured Chardonnay that balances ripe fruit generosity with freshness and finesse.

The nose offers pear, white peach, floral notes, and a hint of baking spice. On the palate it’s round and buttery with flavors of baked apple, toast, brown butter, and honey — ripe and generous, with a soft, lingering finish. A crowd-pleasing style that over-delivers at its price point, especially in the 1.5L magnum format ideal for entertaining.

Wine Advocate — 93 Points | Herbal and spicy, keeping freshness while reflecting the dry, warm vintage conditions. A powerful white with excellent aging potential. An unusual and compelling blend of 86% Sauvignon Blanc and 14% Verdejo — a little à la Bordeaux. Fermented and matured on lees in barrel for seven months.

Winemaker Description

Clean and bright, with fragrant aromas of white flowers, elder, and acacia, layered with refreshing notes of ginger and citrus — mandarin, grapefruit, and lime. Pheasant's Tears | Rkatsiteli-Mtsvane | Tibaani | Qvevri Amber Wine | Kakheti, Republic of Georgia | 2024 | Organic

Pheasant's Tears is one of Georgia's most celebrated natural wine producers, founded by Gela Patalishvili — an 8th-generation winemaker from the Kakheti region — and John Wurdeman, an American painter who fell in love with Georgia and its ancient wine culture in 1998. Since 2007, they have farmed their vineyards with minimal intervention, using wild yeasts and traditional qvevri winemaking to best showcase the extraordinary terroir of Kakheti. The name comes from an old Georgian tale claiming that only the best wine could make a pheasant cry.

Tibaani is a sub-zone of Kakheti, in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, where the ancient Georgian grape varieties Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane have been cultivated for millennia. This blend of the two varieties is vinified in the traditional Georgian manner: fermented and aged in qvevri — traditional clay amphorae buried in the earth — with a full month of skin maceration, producing a wine of remarkable depth, texture, and complexity. The wine is unfiltered and unfined, allowing for natural sedimentation in the bottle.

The 2024 is deep golden in the glass. The nose offers honey blossom, dried apricot, quince, and a hint of walnut, with an earthy, ancient quality that speaks directly to the qvevri and the land. On the palate, full-bodied and dry with a nutty, textured richness, bright acidity, and a long, complex finish. A wine of genuine character that transports you to the cradle of wine civilization.

Expert Review - Vintage 2021 

Michael Alberty of the Wine Enthusiast 93 Points | I'm a Kansas kid, so I'm a sucker for a sunflowers. The juice inside this bottle, however, is what will make me buy it again. The Sunflower offers aromas of lemon, rosemary and a wee bit of butterscotch. A rich texture and lemon curd and brioche flavors are counterpointed by tangy acidity. Pour with The Wizard of Oz.

Eric Guido OF Vinous writes 92 Points | Honeyed flowers, green melon, chamomile and hints of gingery spice waft up from the 2021 Chardonnay The Sunflower. Soothingly round, this impresses with its depths of ripe pit fruits and candied citrus tones, all perfectly offset by a salty tinge of minerality. Kristen Bieler writes:  For a demi-sec, this leans toward the dry, savory end of the spectrum. There are a lot of layers and substance to this, with a savory thread of green herbs and bitter white tea weaving through elderflower, quince and apple flavors, while gentle tannins provide a solid frame. Cool river stone and pink peppercorn notes line the finish, encased in smoke and salt, with length and a lot of depth. The toasty cedar notes will integrate with more time in bottle. Stuart Pigott Writes:  This off-dry Vouvray has terrific depth and a lovely creaminess that’s hard to resist, but it’s tightly wound and needs some time for the aromas to unfurl. Producer Description 

Our 2023 Sauvignon Blanc has aromas of grapefruit, lime zest, white flowers, white peach, lemon grass, and orange peel. On the palate are aromas of pineapple, guava, tropical fruit, Asian pear, candied lemon, and green melon. The wine has a bright acidity and wonderful texture on the mid-palate.

 While the core of this wine is Sauvignon Blanc, the Musqué, Sémillon, and Viognier add a lot of floral notes and viscosity to this vintage. We captured these wonderful floral notes by fermenting each variety separately in concrete eggs, stainless steel drums, and tanks.

The French oak barrels, in which 10% of the wine aged in, were very lightly toasted to preserve the delicate fruity aromas and provide a creamy texture to the mid-palate of the wine.

Expert Review - Vintage 2022

Alain Meadows of Burghound writes 95 Points |  Here too the beautifully layered nose is decidedly cool with its more citrus-suffused aromas of green apple, wet stone and crushed fennel. The more refined, if slightly less concentrated, medium weight flavors flash an almost pungent minerality on the beautifully textured, bone-dry and sneaky long finale. This chiseled effort will need at least a few years of cellaring first as it's quite tightly wound today.  - Burghound 95 ♥️

Vinous 92 Points | The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a nicely detailed bouquet of green apples. It's a touch spicier than the Bourgogne Blanc with a trace of walnut coming through with aeration. The palate is nicely balanced with a keen line of acidity sour lemon hints and again that spice that lingers on the aftertaste.

Allen Meadows of Burghound 90-92 Points | A markedly more floral-suffused nose features notes of cool Granny Smith apple citrus and a touch of mineral reduction. The caressing delicious and plump but agreeably energetic medium-bodied flavors possess solid depth and persistence on the balanced firm and highly refreshing finale. This is also excellent for its level and a wine that should drink well after only 3 to 4 years of keeping but age gracefully for a decade. Recommended.

Mike DeSimone of The Wine Enthusiast writes 94 Points | Medium straw colored, this wine has a bouquet of carambola, crème brûlée and honeysuckle. A soft floral note joins white peach, jasmine, lemongrass and dried apricot flavors set into a full-textured wine with well-matched acidity. Notes of wildflowers and bright citrus fruit endure on the palate.

Winemaker Description 

Made of 100% Istrian Malvasia grape from four vineyards (Kastanjari, Vrh, Santa Lucia, Baredine) located on the west coast of Istria, in an area called Buje (in Croatian, Bujstina), just 50 miles away from Venice. They are 100 meters high on a little hill, a few miles away from the shore. Aged in stainless steel vats on fine lees. Look for alluring aromas of camomile, acacia, lime zest, quince, pear, apricot and ripe nectarine.
