About This Wine

This is not your average Rioja. The 67 Wine Artist Series Rioja Crianza 2019 is a limited edition collaboration between 67 Wine, Bodega Obalo, and legendary Bronx-born street artist Cope2 — one of the most iconic names in graffiti history. The label is an original artwork created exclusively for 67 Wine, making every bottle a collectible as much as a wine.

Behind the art is a wine of genuine quality. Bodega Obalo, established in 2006 on the border of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, farms 100% hand-harvested grapes with rigorous sorting standards. The 2019 Crianza is 98% Tempranillo with small additions of Viura and Garnacha, gravity-crushed into small-batch tanks, fermented, and matured 12 months in French oak before additional bottle aging. The Wine Advocate 90 Points | The NV 10 Year Old Tawny was bottled in 2013 with a bar top cork. It comes in at 106.7 grams per liter of residual sugar. Some Ports emphasize flavor, others emphasize structure. This starts out with perfect focus, elegant but increasingly intense on the tight finish. Early on, it was all about the structure, with a haze of velvet. The flavors were a bit muted initially, but it unfolded into an elegant and graceful whole with a flavorful finish. Its bright, clean feel always remains as it fleshes out and puts on weight. 

The Wine Spectator 90 Points | Refined, with bright flavors of dried berry, plum compote and cherry tart that are long and lush. Very creamy on the finish, which features chocolate mousse.

The Wine Enthusiast 90 Points | In the full Fonseca style, this aged tawny shows both rich fruit and a more serious wood-aged character. Good acidity follows the sweet initial taste, broadening into ripe flavors of nut, plum jelly, and a final crisp acidity.

The Australian Wine Companion 91 Points | Yalumba continues to grace us with a range of wines made from viognier, from entry-level to aspirational, that convey a deep understanding of both the variety and site. Pale straw with green flashes and aromas of lemon, grapefruit and apricot along with hints of lemon sorbet, wildflowers, a liminal whiff of white pepper and stone. Flecks of dried herbs join in on the palate, which is stony and savoury, lingering nicely as it fades away. A great introduction to the variety.

In Elciego, Florentino Martínez Monje and María José founded Bodegas Luberri in 1991 to make wines that speak of Rioja Alavesa and invite a second glass. Florentino helped champion the region's traditional carbonic maceration style; today, daughters Miren and Laura help carry the vineyard and cellar work forward.

Orlegi is Luberri's youthful red, made in the carbonic maceration tradition. The existing producer description highlights ripe red and purple forest fruit, violets and licorice, followed by an agile, fresh palate and a green almond finish. It is an inviting Rioja for a lively dinner table.

At a recent Panel Tasting with fellow wine professionals for Sevenfifty.com I was able to to taste this beautiful and cheerful red from Rioja Alavesa made by winemaker Florentino Martinez Monje. Luberri Orlegi 2020 is a wonderful happy-go-lucky blend of Tempranillo & Viura using only native yeast to kick-start fermentation and carbonic macerated to preserve the youthfulness of the Tempranillo and Viura. Aromas of Blue fruit and purple flowers (violets and lilacs). On the palate the wine is fresh and pretty enticing. Beautiful finish. The perfect red for Thanksgiving with that is sure to bring lots of cheers to your dinner table.

Domaine de Villargeau is a family estate with a story rooted in determination and a deep respect for the land. In 1991, brothers Fernand and Jean-François Thibault cleared hillsides in the Coteaux du Giennois that had lain abandoned since the phylloxera crisis, planting vines on south-southwest-facing slopes that enjoy exceptional sun exposure. The next generation followed: Marc returned to the estate in 2000 armed with formal training in viticulture and oenology, and Yves joined shortly after, bringing with him a strong commitment to environmental stewardship. That commitment culminated in 2019 when the domaine launched its full conversion to organic agriculture — a milestone that reflects the family’s long-term vision for the land.

The Coteaux du Giennois is a small, often overlooked Loire appellation situated just north of Sancerre, sharing the same chalky, flint-rich soils that give the region’s Sauvignon Blancs their signature mineral precision. High Elevation Organic Vineyard

50% Malbec, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on a high elevation vineyard (3,900m) with vines ranging from 12 years (Malbec) to 72 years (Cabernet Sauvignon) in sandy/clay soils. The grapes are hand harvested and kept 50% whole cluster, then fermented in stainless steel tanks. All wines are farmed organically and made with no corrections, fermented with native indigenous yeasts, and a low addition of sulfur is added just before bottling.

Alejandro comes from a long background in organic farming, and this is the family's first foray into wine. The winery's style focuses on making light, bright, clean, and vibrant wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Uco Valley. The labels were even created by the family - Carmela, the other daughter, designed them from their brother's artwork, making each bottle a true family collaboration.
